Congrats to the team at Rodney Bay Marina

IGY TO THE RESCUE:

Last week, a team from IGY Rodney Bay Marina was involved in a late night rescue of a British pair of sailors taking part in a trans-Atlantic race from France to Costa Rica. The sailors Dee Caffari and Brian Thompson managed to finish eighth of the 14 starters in the 4,800 mile race, but only after a three-member party from Rodney Bay Marina headed by General Manager Adam Foster had responded to  their call for help during their final run in the Caribbean Sea.Sailing on board the yacht “Aviva”, Caffari and Thompson suddenly found themselves in need of fuel to run the hydraulics on board so Rodney Bay Marina went out to fill their need at 9.30 p.m. in heavy seas. Joining Foster on the mission were Nigel Rodney and Alex Prowse.“We also gave them a basket with a lovely array of fruit from St Lucia,” said Foster, who noted that Caffari had competed in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) before and she knew that she could rely on Rodney Bay Marina for help.

The Jacques Vabre race in which the British sailors were competing started in Le Havre, France in early November.

After crossing the finishing line, Caffari commented: “I am extremely happy that Brian, Aviva and I arrived safely in Costa Rica. It was tough out there for us, not just battling the extreme weather in the first week, but the ongoing problems we had with the generator and lack of power as a result.”“The guys at Rodney Bay Marina, led by Adam Foster, have been fantastic. As soon as I spoke to them earlier in the week they were able to suggest the most efficient and flexible plan. Rodney Bay Marina is the finish for the ARC each year, and if you can cope with a couple of hundred yachties appearing on your doorstep then I suppose one Open 60 making a flying visit is fairly simple! So a big thank you to Adam and his team,” Caffari stated in a website report.
Meanwhile, the first activity of ARC 2009 sponsored by the IGY Rodney Bay Marina comes off this Saturday at 5pm with IGY’s Fish Fiesta, where local fisherman will put their catch on display and  prepared for sale to patrons.  The relaxing atmosphere will also feature live music from a popular band. The second IGY sponsored events takes place Sunday IGY’s Lazy Day where early arrivals will relax and enjoy steel band music.  The first vessel in the ARC 2009 event was expected to cross the finishing line early Friday.
