MONTAUK YACHT CLUB RESORT & MARINA HUNTS FOR HISTORICAL PHOTOS AND MEMORABILIA LEADING TO 80th ANNIVERSARY

The Montauk Yacht Club Resort & Marina is on a hunt for historical photos and memorabilia related to its historic property, which celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2009.

All submissions will be considered for a permanent exhibit at The Montauk Yacht Club’s Cohi Bar. Once known as the cigar bar room, deriving its name from the premium cigar tobacco cohiba, The Cohi Bar is an octagon- shaped room on the ground floor of the property’s own historic lighthouse.  Built in the 1920s by Carl Fisher, who then envisioned Montauk as the “Miami of the North,” it is in the image of the larger and nearby Montauk Lighthouse at the Point, commissioned by George Washington in 1796.

The exhibit will be open in April 2009 when the Yacht Club re-opens after a multi-million dollar transformation and celebrates its 80th anniversary themed A Grand Tradition, A New Beginning.

Photos and memorabilia will be acknowledged in categories such as oldest, most historically significant and best association with the Yacht Club’s legacy and heritage.  The best submissions will be awarded prizes including weekend stays and invitations to the Yacht Club’s special events throughout the Season. Those wishing to donate photographs and/or articles should contact Debbie Tuma who is undertaking archival research.  Tuma can be reached at (631) 338-5421 or at dstuma@yahoo.com. Submitters may also contact the Montauk Yacht Club directly at 631-668-3100 or at huntforhistory@montaukyachtclub.com.  Submissions will be accepted now through March 2009. Even High Resolution Scans are appreciated for those not wishing to part with the originals.
