PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JANUARY 19th, 2022

January 19, 2022 – International Tourism Fair (FITUR), Madrid –

IGY Málaga Marina has been awarded with the “Excelencias Turísticas Azul 2021 Award”, for its commitment to the marine environment. The distinguished jury valued the following technical aspects of the marina for its sustainable approach:

José Luis Almazán and Óscar Calero with the award at the main entrance of the International Tourism Fair.

  • Use of ECOncrete in the construction of the wave attenuator, to promote the proliferation of marine life across the marina.
  • In-slip sewage vacuum collection to minimize discharge of wastewater into the sea.
  • High amperage electrical supply to promote the shutdown of combustion engines while the vessel is docked in port, decreasing carbon footprint.
  • Installation of Seabin, an automated solid waste collection device to improve water cleanliness.

The set of these actions will promote that the cleaning of the waters, the supply of marine life and the volume of emissions improve with respect to the situation prior to the implementation of the project.

The award ceremony was attended by José Luis Almazán the CEO of Ocean Capital Partners, author of the project and shareholder of the marina and Óscar Calero the General Manager of IGY Málaga Marina. Both highlighted that “Our project in Málaga is deeply innovative in environmental terms, assuming our commitment to increase ecological awareness in the superyacht industry in which we operate. Hence, the technical aspects that the Premios Excelencias jury has kindly assessed to grant us this prestigious award is only the beginning, since we will work diligently with our clients and collaborators to constantly improve the environment in which we depend. We are currently in the final stages of the development and we are looking forward to inaugurating Spain´s first specific superyacht Marina this spring”.

This 17th edition of the Premios Excelencias took place within the framework of International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid, the most important Tourism Fair in the world. The awards are distinguished by the promotion of excellence in different areas related to tourism. The prize giving ceremony was attended by representatives from over 16 countries and included Prime Ministers, Ambassadors, Secretaries of State and Heads of local governments. The Port Authority of Málaga was represented by its Chairman, Mr. Carlos Rubio, Mr. Miguel Artola (Director) and Ms. Pilar Fernández-Figares (Manager).

The development is now in its key phase in environmental terms, since the breakwater that incorporates ECOncrete technology is being constructed. As one of the most innovative aspects of the construction in environmental terms, this technology-based material is designed to encourage the development of rich and diverse marine life and natural processes like calcification and photosynthesis (that uptakes CO2). In addition to these sustainable advantages, it increases the service life of the structures. By combining a special mold to create marine life friendly shapes with a special additive to the mixture, this solution will stimulate amazing outcomes in environmental terms.

We are delighted to receive this award and we thank Grupo Excelencias for recognizing IGY Málaga Marina as this shows our determination and commitment to the environment that is reflected in across IGY´s network of 21 Marinas in 13 countries.

Óscar Calero – General Manager · IGY Málaga Marina.
