Summary:
As an IGY Head Skipper, you will lead the Commercial Skippers and Crew team by providing a high caliber of sailing experience to clients of all skill levels, ensuring a safe and enjoyable learning environment. Your role will encompass providing sailing experiences and adventures, teaching effective sailing techniques, maintaining equipment, fostering a passion for sailing among clients, and supporting the overall luxury experience of Sindalah Island. In addition to sailing school duties, you will be responsible for the full upkeep and maintenance of the school’s sailing yachts and safety boats. You will also manage and mentor your team, ensuring high standards of instruction and safety. When there are no sailing lessons or boat maintenance required, you will assist the marina team with various tasks. Your proactive, ‘can-do’ attitude will be essential in promoting IGY’s commitment to excellence and luxury. Furthermore, you will play a key role in organizing and running corporate and team-building events, sailing experiences, and training camps, creating a dynamic and engaging environment for all guests.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned):
- Lead and conduct sailing lessons and activities for beginners to advanced clients, following the school’s curriculum.
- Ensure the safety of all clients during lessons, adhering to safety standards and protocols.
- Maintain and perform regular upkeep on the school’s sailing yachts and safety boats.
- Demonstrate sailing techniques and participate in events and activities to showcase and promote the sailing school.
- Run corporate and team-building events and sailing experiences.
- Host potential training camps.
- Assist the marina team with various tasks when there are no sailing lessons or maintenance activities.
- Develop and implement instructional materials and lesson plans.
- Evaluate students’ progress and provide constructive feedback.
- Stay updated with the latest sailing techniques and teaching methods.
- Manage inventory of sailing equipment and ensure all equipment is in good working condition.
- Foster a positive and engaging learning environment.
- Promote the luxury experience of Sindalah Island through professional and enthusiastic interactions with guests.
- Manage and mentor Sailing Instructors and Assistant Sailing Instructors, ensuring consistent high-quality instruction and safety.
- Report to and coordinate with the Sailing Manager to align instructional programs with overall school objectives.
- Resolve any operational issues that arise, ensuring minimal disruption to the sailing school’s activities.
- Demonstrate sailing techniques and participate in events and activities to showcase and promote the sailing school.
- Stay updated with the latest sailing techniques and teaching methods.
- Manage inventory of sailing equipment and ensure all equipment is in good working condition.
- Foster a positive and engaging learning environment.
- Promote the luxury experience of Sindalah Island through professional and enthusiastic interactions with guests.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Chief Instructor / Supervisory role or equivalent within a sailing school / Yacht Club environment.
- Commercial Skipper, Yacht master or equivalent qualification
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
- A minimum of 3 seasons experience teaching on keelboats, yachts such as J70’s
- Experience of high-performance foiling sailing yachts such as Swan 36 or equivalent, desirable
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid certifications from recognized sailing organizations (e.g., RYA, ASA).
- Strong knowledge of sailing techniques and safety protocols.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well with students of all ages and skill levels.
- First Aid certification preferred but not essential.
- Power boat qualification (RYA, ASA, AS, or other equivalents)
- VHF Operator’s certificate (preferred, but not essential)
- Valid Driver’s License
- Passion for sailing with a ‘can-do’ attitude.
- Proactive and able to work independently.
- Ability to swim and perform physical tasks related to sailing.
Work Environment:
The work environment is primarily outdoors, with exposure to various weather conditions. The role requires working near water and on boats, with occasional exposure to mechanical parts. Proper personal protective equipment will be provided and must be worn as required.
